The liberal commentator and Air America host, who has become a breakout star for the cable channel during this campaign, is taking over the 9 p.m. slot following Keith Olbermann, who she often subs for on "Countdown." Olbermann broke the news in what he called a "fully authorized leak" this afternoon on the left-wing Web site Daily Kos. Dan Abrams, the former MSNBC general manager who had been hosting "Verdict" at that hour, will continue as NBC's chief legal correspondent and will be a daytime anchor for MSNBC.
With the promotion, which takes effect Sept. 8, Maddow, 35, breaks into what had been criticized as a boys club at the network, led by Olbermann and Chris Matthews. Hillary Clinton's campaign frequently ripped MSNBC for what it called sexist coverage during the Democratic primaries. Maddow, who lives with her girlfriend Susan Mikula in Manhattan and Northampton, Mass., may also be the first openly gay woman to host a prime-time program.
All I can say is yaaaaaaay! And poor Dan Abrahms.
Great! I watched some of Dan Abrams, he seems like he treats other people like idiots sometimes. So its a step up for MSNBC.
I'd heard this was in the works. Good for Rachel.
Remarkably, this season's discovery isn't a glossy matinee idol or a smooth-talking partisan hack
Fully in agreement on the former characterization. The latter, however, is simply so risible only Howie Kurtz could write it.
Now as for Rachel and Keith's mutual admiration society, I'm just curious as to which one wears the strap-on.
And now They are wondering what to call the show... I have an idea, how about the Barak Obama Show? As a democrat I am embarrassed that MSNBC has turned into the Left Version of Fox News. They used to be fairly centrist, now they are just blatent in their carrying of Baracks water... They are beginning to turn O'Really's fodder into fact and thats not a good thing.
This may be true, but in the bigger picture it creates a balance between the two sides.
Playing the Fox game legitimizes it and that is wrong. I want objective information, not cheerleading.
They have become a second rate combination of Entertainment Tonight and The Jon Stewart Show.
No, I just think it hurts to know the truth, denial is always the first emotion.
Besides only a fool would watch one newscast and expect to get the full story. I watch Keith Olbermann, and I catch CNN and occasionally I will watch Bill O' the clown, because some of his reporting is actually good. You have to take the best from all sides, do some of your own research then draw your own conclusions.
One more comment, Rush Limbaugh, no way, I cannot even waste my time listening to such mindless drivel and paranoia. Some people left and right are just so far out there, that it becomes a gag reel more than useful information.
Does anyone know if Dan Abrams is getting the boot or if he is just being moved around in the schedule?
I never disliked Dan--he just never held my interest. For me his show became walk the dog hour--so I could be back in time for Keith.
Exactly. It is almost like he is trying to be Chris Matthews, he just can't cut them off like Chris does. Dan is like the 11 year old trying to get in on his dad's tuesday night poker game.
G-o-o, Rachel! She deserves a shot, and I can't wait to see how she does with the harness off.
And those comments about Abrams crack me up; he seems like he might get his driving privileges snatched if he come home too late.
